Production of promotional films, commercials and marketing movies – by: Eli Levy
Know and Love the Brand and Work Processes
When I approach the production of a commercial film – advertising, promotional or marketing – the first thing I have to think about is this:how can I best tell my client's story via the film. This is my role as a film maker. I conduct a comprehensive study of the company, connect with it, learn to love it – and only then do I start working on the movie.Whether it's a commercial, a promotional film or any other type of film – a film not made with a love of filmmaking / with love for the subject and a true connection between the filmmaker and the brand will simply not be a good film. So, task number one is to get to know and love the brand. Then we write a script.
In my view, writing a script for a promotional film has the same fundamental objectives as any other writing. For a promotional film, too, or for a commercial or marketing film, there is one objective:move the viewer, create change, motivate to action. The viewer should leave the film a little changed from what they were before. So, in fact, to know how to make the perfect combination of required information, intriguing visuals and moving content.
At this stage, the professional team comes into play for production of the film and for supporting me as director and creator of the film.Coordinate shooting days, tour locations, getting to know the characters in the film and fully research them.Often you count on a character to make the film for you, and you arrive on site to find that that is not the case.On the day of the shoot, the challenge for me as the film's creator is to take the script and raise it another notch, to get the most out of my characters.
To get the most out of my client's brand. This is not easy – but it is my favorite stage of the entire process. Then we come back with a pile of tapes and raw footage.
We look at these, and re-write the script. Why?That's how it works. You write a script and have a certain artistic concept of your film, but in fact the characters do not always give you exactly what you were hoping to find. It's not always easy, but sometimes you find that the character in the film gave you something different, or an angle you hadn't considered when preparing for the shoot. So this stage in film production is a very challenging one.The video editor and I build the story and create a first draft edit of the film for approval by the client. After a few drafts of the film, the advanced post-production stage begins, and the graphic packaging, which I describe on this website under Photography and Editing. |
